How to Prepare for a Yoga Teacher Training Course in India

Packing and preparing for a yoga teacher training in India

The moment you sign up for a Yoga Teacher Training in India, the journey has already begun, well before the flight is booked. Preparing well is less about logistics than about arriving open to what the training actually has for you.

1. Journal Your Reasons

A TTC is not just another certification. Before you arrive, it is worth writing down what called you to yoga, why you are drawn to teach or go deeper, and what you hope to let go of and grow into. The clearer that inner reason, the steadier you tend to be when the training gets intense.

2. Ease Into a Routine Early

Many students arrive scattered from ordinary life and are immediately asked to wake at 5:30am. It helps to start adjusting beforehand: waking thirty minutes earlier than usual, adding twenty to thirty minutes of daily asana, pranayama or seated meditation, and practicing a few minutes of morning silence. The aim is not intensity, it is attunement.

3. Let Go of "Perfect"

Many new students worry they are not flexible enough, spiritual enough, or otherwise ready. A TTC is not about arriving polished, it is about being teachable: open, curious, and willing to show up as you actually are, not as you think you should be.

4. Pack Light, Arrive Open

Lightweight, breathable yoga clothes, a journal you will actually use, a water bottle, natural toiletries and basic first aid cover most of what you need, almost anything else is available locally in Rishikesh. What matters more than the suitcase is arriving with openness and curiosity.

5. Prepare to Be Changed, Without Scripting It

Training in India changes people, often not in the ways they expected. Rather than trying to control the outcome, it helps to spend more time in nature beforehand, reduce screen time, slow down your calendar in the week before departure, and leave room for silence. What the training has to offer is not always what you think you are there to learn.
